Ways to Make Move In Day Easier
Plan On Things Going Wrong
In every move something will go wrong.
That’s just what happens there are so many moving parts that need to come together so that you can get settled in your new home.
Plan on at least a few things going wrong.
Movers will be late, or early.
Traffic will be bad.
The couch won’t fit through the door.
Something will not happen the way you planned during the move in day and that’s ok. Be ready to laugh it off and let it go. Keeping you sense of humor and going with the flow of the day is essential on move in day.
Pack A Move In Day Box
To keep yourself from getting totally overwhelmed on move in day when you’re packing your household items pack a separate box or two just for move in day. Keep those boxes in your vehicle with you don’t let the movers move them. In those boxes put everything that you will need to get by for a day or two in your new home so that you don’t need to worry if the furniture arrives late, or if you don’t have the energy to unpack all the boxes on move in day. Things like bed linens, a shower curtain, towels, air mattresses if your furniture isn’t arriving right away, dishes, glasses, and silverware, pots and pans, and some staples like coffee or tea.
Keep Your Paperwork In One Spot
Having all of your important paperwork like your move in documents for your new home or apartment, important numbers, your new address, your old address, and your personal papers like your identification with you will make your move in day a lot less stressful. A great way to keep your paperwork organized but easy to take with you is to buy a regular three ring binder and some clear plastic sleeves along with some dividers. Create sections in the binder for the new home, the old home, the movers, and whatever else you find helpful. Put all your documents in the plastic sleeves and then put them in the appropriate sections. Keep that binder with you at all times during the move. Whenever you need a name, a phone number, or a document it will be at your fingertips and you’ll be able to find it in seconds.
Pack Some Supplies And Lots Of Snacks
It’s going to be a long and busy day so make sure that you plan ahead and pack a cooler with some sports drinks and water and pack some food and snacks. Healthy food will give you the energy you need to get through the day and staying hydrated by drinking water or sports drinks will help you keep going. Move in day is a marathon, not a sprint. But when it’s all over you will finally be settled in your new home.
